"Serving in Florida" too Biased

After reading "Serving in Florida" by Barbara Ehrenreich, I found myself reflecting on my own experience in the food industry. Even though she was talking about waitressing and I have only worked in non-serving fast food jobs, I still really identified with a lot of what Ehrenreich was saying. People weren't getting paid enough for all the hard work they do, which means their quality of life is often subpar, there is unfairness when it comes to hours and breaks, etc. etc. However, I found myself wondering about one thing: Are all the managers really so bad and are all the workers really so great?

My answer is definitely "Sometimes, but not always". Ehrenreich really plays up the corruption among managers, classifying them as corporate (which is the opposite of humanity). Now, don't get me wrong, I have had some terrible managers in my day . I mean, like, super shitty. However, I have also had AWESOME managers who work their butts off and are firm, but fair to their employees. Ehrenreich shows no sign of these managers. Perhaps she didn't run into any in her small sample size, but she should still acknowledge that great managers are out there.

Ehrenreich also shows all workers as being incredibly hard working, desperate people. Of course, while this may have been her experience (highly doubtful), not all people can be described with these words. If someone has worked... well anywhere, really, they will have probably run into the people that are lazy, terrible workers that make life hell for everyone else working there. Obviously, there are TONS of people out there who are working these crappy serving jobs trying to make ends meet and are really great workers, but not ALL workers are like that.

TL;DR: "Serving in Florida", although effective in other ways, is too biased to be read as a true experience in the restaurant industry.
