ENG 102

Spring 2017

Remixing Project

REMIXING ASSIGNMENT

Assignment

This semester, we have been discussing and practicing academic writing skills. For your final assignment, you will be completing a remixing project.

Remixing is “the process of taking old pieces of text, images, sounds, and video and stitching them together to form a new product” (Ridolfo and DeVoss). For this assignment, you will be taking a piece of your own work from this semester and 'remix' it into something new. You may choose from a variety of mediums (photographs, painting, movies, social media, website, drama, video game, music, etc.) to create a new product. Regardless of the medium, the finished product must have an argument and be easily understood for your intended audience. You will begin by choosing one of the essays you have completed for this class and create a new product based on that essay. The argument can be the same or different from the essay, but there must be an argument in your remixed product. The remixed product must include your own ideas as well as incorporate other peoples' work as well.

This assignment is worth a total of 200 points (out of 1000 in the course). It consists of four stages. See below for the grade, due date, and expectation breakdown:

Project Proposal (25) DUE DATE

Rough Draft (25) DUE DATE

Revision process (25) DUE DATE

Final Draft (75) DUE DATE

Presentation (50) DUE DATE

Project Proposal: Consists of a maximum one page, double-spaced explanation of your remix plan. Please include what medium you're going to chose and how you plan to use both your own work/the work of others to make an argument. Also, include your intended audience and how this will affect the choices you will make in your project (language, visual representation, design choices, etc).

Rough Draft: The rough draft can be ugly. Although it need not be complete, I must be able to see your entire argument in your rough draft.

Revision Process: Turn in evidence of writing process. This may include an outline, several drafts, peer review, meetings with me, etc. You are required to attend at least one consultation and hand in the RoC.

Final Draft: Because of the creative nature of this topic, there cannot be a page limit. However, there must be a complete argument that integrates both your ideas and the ideas of others.

Presentation: You will present your original work and your remixed project to the class. The presentation will be a time that you can show off your new work to the class. You may choose how to present the work, but there must be some sort of visual  incorporated into the presentation (handouts, prezi, websites, images, etc.) Of course, if your project is visual, you may simply show the class your work. In your presentation, you will explain why you chose that medium, your work process, and the argument that you have ultimately made in the new, remixed product.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Focus on a specific purpose for a defined audience

3. Integrate their own ideas with those of others to draw conclusions and build arguments as a result of collection, evaluation, synthesis, and citation of academic research

4. Construct a well-organized text that coherently integrates outside sources to support a clearly stated thesis
